I have been Shire Sharing's volunteer coordinator for the Nashua area in the past. I donate and volunteer for Shire Sharing because I believe in building community and helping others. These days it seems like we spend more and more of our time interacting with faceless corporations or governments instead of interacting with our neighbors. Now, more than ever, I believe that direct action is the way to make a real difference in the world and in our neighborhood.
What we really need is not programs or policies, but relationships and community. One meal in a year is not going to lift anyone out of poverty—but it is enough to lift people's spirits and help connect people who may feel alienated. Shire Sharing is a great first step, and I hope it continues to grow year after year.
